Why Shorts are capped at 720p
Shorts are vertical clips, nearly all filmed on a phone. Above 720p the extra detail is invisible on the screens people actually watch them on, while our conversion and upload costs keep climbing.
So the cap is deliberate: clips finish sooner for everyone, instead of everyone waiting longer for detail nobody can see.
It applies only to Shorts and Reels. An ordinary landscape YouTube video still downloads at up to 1080p where the source has it.
How this differs from a normal YouTube download
The steps are identical. Shorts are simply much shorter, so they finish faster, and they offer fewer resolutions because a phone-filmed source usually holds only a few.
