Which video quality should you download?
Pick 720p unless you have a reason not to: it looks sharp on a phone or laptop while keeping the file reasonable. Go to 1080p for a TV or for editing, and drop to 360p or 480p when storage or data is tight.
What the numbers actually mean
The number is the video's height in pixels. 1080p is 1080 pixels tall, roughly twice the detail of 540p and four times the pixel count. More pixels means a larger file, and the growth is steep — a jump from 720p to 1080p often doubles the size for a difference most people cannot see on a phone screen.
Screen size decides whether you can tell. On a phone held at arm's length, 720p and 1080p look nearly identical. On a television across a room, the gap is obvious.
When the highest option is the wrong choice
If you plan to send the file through a chat app, most will re-compress it anyway, so a large download is wasted effort. If you are on a metered mobile connection, the smaller file is simply cheaper. And if the original recording was not sharp to begin with, a higher resolution cannot invent detail that was never captured.
The one case for taking the largest available file is editing. Cropping, zooming or stabilising all throw away pixels, so starting with more of them leaves room to work.
Why some options say Instant and others do not
Platforms sometimes store a video as one ready-made file, and sometimes as separate video and audio streams that have to be combined.
